Even though I was raised as a Christian girl, I loved Halloween for as long as I can remember. As a child, I dressed up and went trick-or treating in my small town / rural neighborhood. Almost nothing bad happened except “papering” of some neighbors trees, which consisted of kids taking rolls of toilet paper and going out late at night and somehow managing to spread it around people’s front yard trees or shrubs. If it rained it became near impossible to remove that crap the next day, so homeowners hated it when kids pulled that kind of prank. My mom told me she’d better never hear tell of me being involved in such antics, so I never did partake in those activities–though I knew kids who did!
I loved creating haunted houses with my best friend, Doris Lee. I began doing such things on my own in our basement, then later with her at our neighborhood Grange building, which was kind of like a meeting house for various groups. I often wonder if it still exists today. There was a group of us kids that really had fun on Halloween for many years, and I think of those activities during this time of year. When I see the granddaughters preparing for outings such as “trunk or treat,” which they’ve already been out at this week.
I’m very thankful that I get to go out trick-or-treating with our granddaughters in a few nights (though it will be COLD… it’s already been so cold, in the low 30s at night here the past several nights in New England)! Brrr! It’s okay, I’ll freeze for a few hours Saturday night to soak up all the fun, shrieks, and laughter! LOL
Speaking of Halloween, here’s a couple things I thought you might enjoy before I dive deeper into the subject of dichotomy.

And speaking of ghosts, we just watched the first episode of the new season of Dexter Resurrection last night, and it did NOT disappoint! https://www.imdb.com/title/tt33043892/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_5_nm_3_in_0_q_dexter%20re
And not to make light of this in any way, we were stunned to learn of a friend’s passing this week. We had no idea our friend was even ill! It literally sucked the breath out of me when I read his wife’s post on Facebook that he had died. If THAT wasn’t enough, moments ago I read another friend’s post that her otherwise young, strong, and healthy husband has died! I’m simply in shock at this point. I will definitely be thinking of both men tonight as I go out trick-or-treating tonight with our granddaughters and how connected we all still are (through the mystic)!
Dichotomies
Growing up in a home where my mom was strict and very God-believing, but conversely seeing the example of my dad as “ladies man” and the two of them bickering and arguing all of the time, it’s no wonder I could always see “two sides of every story.” My mom and I were also extremely close and she’d confide all kinds of things to me, mostly because other than a close neighbor and sister, mom didn’t have many friends to talk with. And I was always there, as her only child. Thus, I kind of saw mom as the angel and dad as, well, something less. Not the devil, really. But I didn’t perceive my dad as a good guy. I did love my dad, but I saw him as flawed. Looking back now, I think dad was probably a sex addict during my youth, and that’s probably why I understand Russell Brand. My dad was quite the handsome man, and had loads of charm and sex appeal. He even went to Hollywood once-upon-a-time, before he met mom, to try to become an actor–based on a high school teacher’s suggestion. But dad didn’t like LA and often told me that out there, they just “teach you how to lie.” That would paint a strong picture for me about Hollyweird. To this day, I like certain actors for their acting, but I know they’re all liars so I’ve never been one to listen to what they say in ads, or in politically motivated speeches. Nope! Celebrity endorsements of anything do not influence me one bit!
Now, where dichotomies draw me in is that I look for the varying shades of gray in people and my perception and perspectives of situations. I do judge. I’ve always had a strong sense of justice. But the older I get the less I judge, or perhaps, the less harshly I judge. I have this process/philosophy of Integrating the Spirals where I gaze at a mirrorball or peer into a kaleidoscope and ask myself “when in my life did I do such a thing or treat someone poorly.” I find that process helps me judge less and find the “truth that lies somewhere in between.” And that’s why I still enjoy Halloween. It allows me the time and opportunity to consider the shadow side of things. I can dress as a witch and observe the scary things, but still know that Omniscience God has my back, or has me covered. One could say they’re wearing the armor of God. I still kind of think I’m playing with fire. But I know what a burn feels like, so I don’t light the match and burn myself. Yet, I believe God created everything, even the dark side. This may be me playing with words here, or misinterpreting things, but Christ Jesus went to hell to conquer death (after he was crucified and before he ascended to the right hand of God, the Father). So, perhaps, Halloween is also my time to do the same. Conquer the darkness. Overcome my weaknesses. Draw strength from my ancestors who are all on the Other Side, not in a voodoo way, but in a Coco way (if you’ve seen that animated film). I don’t connect as a channel or medium, per se, but I sense a closeness to my deceased relatives–as I don’t actually believe they are all that far away, at least not at this time of year. And that teaches me love and respect for the boundaries between us, the sheets of cellophane that is The Veil. I appreciate the yin and the yang of life. The web of life. The intricacies of life. And the mysteries of what comes after.
