I got aggravated with my fountain pen the other day and jumped on Amazon to order some oil pastels and sketch pad to continue drawing and sketching without the mess of a pen that leaks ink all over my hand. And yes, I probably did something wrong with the pen that caused it, but for less than $20 I have easier tools to work with. Thus, I’ll probably sketch MORE! And isn’t that what we want? More doing and less aggravation? Yes!

My friend, Linda Lewis from Arkansas, who now lives in Thailand got me started drawing/sketching) as a new hobby, and I’m really enjoying it! See Linda’s painted sketches over at her blog at: https://creativeartworksblog.com

I’ll post another update on Tuesday or Wednesday to let you know what the chiropractor says about my two toes. I continue to do fascia blasting, and massage with essential oil (Balance from DoTerra), as well as use acupressure and red light therapy on it, and a bit of feeling is coming back. I also do heel raises (sometimes called, toe raises or ankle raises), and that may be helping as well.

That’s what I teach in Integrating the Spirals. Use what you know, and integrate the various techniques into your day. I think it’s easy, but some people need to talk this stuff through, and that’s why I offer Zoom sessions. More to come on that, but if you’d like to begin right away, let me know in the comments.

Integrating the Spirals – JIGGLE WIGGLE

I’ve rebranded JIGGLE BUTT to JIGGLE WIGGLE per one of my followers comment!

I’m now encouraging those “over 50” to open to lifelong learning (observe, gently question, and loosen up their pre-conceived beliefs, aka ‘Programming’), become more aware of their thoughts and emotions to encourage more ease, loosen up and move their bodies (too many are stuck in their heads and physically unhealthy), become strong, and resilient in spirit, soul, mind, body. And to question EVERYTHING!

  1. My son had a small box of pastels which he left here at home. So it would be nice to have a go having read your post. Left charcoal and chalk too. My late brother Kev used pastels all the time when he created art and had some very nice results of free expressive artwork. Just expressing his emotions through experimentation by using improvisation…invading ‘ad hoc’ into the paper’s space. But not filling it totally. He used black paper a lot. I suppose I seem to remember it as a kind of ‘explosive colour chaos’. Very random. But, as you know, no visual memory exists of his art results in my mind.

Sounds like you have chosen a nice medium to work with as you continue to delve into various artistic formats. I imagine you adopting spiritual vibes Sheila. Ethereal, with your knowledge of symbols and ‘other worldly’ choices. With your layering spirals, it seems you are already expressing with freedom. Cheers for sharing your new adventure. All the best.

    1. Thanks so much, Gray! And that’s sweet to know about your brother, Kev, using pastels too and exploring creatively! You both must have gotten the Creative Gene! Ha! And yes, I remember about the Aphantasia and thus, you recall he did those but you don’t “see” them in your mind’s eye. I agree that my idea of the spirals was to fill, yet not fill, the paper and to do a sort of landscape with the sun colors at the top, then water, then soil. I attempted to use all the colors in the box, but I didn’t (as there are 50 different colors in the box). I will keep playing with this, and share the better ones. I hope to play at least once a week, though now, spring is almost here and we’ll have to see how my time gets spent. I’ve decided not to grow as much outside, just some okra and my regular herbs, with maybe the addition of one or two depending on what seeds I find. The okra will be for medicinal purposes since learning that drinking okra water will help our digestion and “output.”

      1. Cheers Sheila. I did look at ‘spiral art’, or more appropriately ‘using a spiral shape in art’, on the internet and it has many ways of expression. There is a huge spiral in the community garden in Machynlleth. I suppose there are very many ways to produce them in art form. Your layering idea is very interesting. Earth bound to Sky dance. And everything in between.

We have started thinking of what to plant this year too. Angie cuts back the herbs and they always come back stronger. So, haven’t needed to replace many of them. The rhubarb too just keeps returning. We are only going to plant the successes from the past few years now. No more lettuce varieties (takes up too much space in the raised bed and they all grow quickly and need to be picked at the same time). I tried okra in a curry once. Not a fan. But interesting regards its properties. Nutrition and its importance is a fascinating subject.

      2. It’s so funny, Gray, that the word (town’s name) of Machynlleth came to my mind the other day to use in a conversation as an example of Welsh words and how hard they can be to pronounce. And then I read it here in your comment. I do love that name. Something about it. I hear you about the spirals. I could draw them all the day long! I really like etching them but there’s only so many cups, mugs, or bowls I could have thus, limiting how many art works I could etch. Then, I saw an etching pen on a Facebook ad that I could get and etch rocks, glass, mirrors, etc.! I about gasped! Ha!

I hear you about the herbs and okra. We found out about okra water and how good it aids digestion and elimination and I have not been able to buy any here at all, yet, so I bought the seeds and they are germinating in the kitchen as I speak! The personal trainer I know from Florida, he and his wife drink it. And they said making it from frozen or canned okra doesn’t work, thus I must have fresh. We’ll see how it goes for us.

      3. Machynlleth has put in for cultural town of the year for 2027. Awaiting to see if they make the shortlist. It has a fine ethical philosophy. So may stand a chance.

I bought a pyrography gun to draw and stamp shapes onto the leather notebooks. It has a nice vibe. I bet spiral art would look nice. Especially on wood.

I drink Kefir mainly for gut health. Also, I’ve been vegetarian for 50 years. And with Angie and the Wholefood shop, good choices arrive here at home. Only time I was truly unhealthy was as a nurse. Busy shifts, too much chocolate from Family Thank You’s, and stress related burn out. I can see why fresh okra is best. Turmeric root, as opposed to powder, is preferred too. Fingers crossed you find the okra beneficial.

  2. That sounds like such a refreshing pivot—and honestly, a wise one 😊

Sometimes it’s not about mastering the tool, but choosing the one that lets you show up more often. If oil pastels and a sketch pad remove the friction, then that’s a win. More creating, less frustration—that’s exactly the goal.

And there’s something beautifully freeing about sketching with pastels too… a bit more forgiving, a bit more playful. It lets you focus on expression rather than perfection.
