Integrating the Spirals: Moral Ambiguities (Truths and Deception)
An interesting topic I bring up during some of my, Integrating the Spirals™ sessions has to do with moral ambiguities, truth telling, lies, and deceptions–especially those within familial relationships. If you would rather listen instead of read, play the audio:
I think I’m always so drawn to this subject because I was an only child of yin and yang parents who argued often. I was either blamed for things (that one did and would not admit to the other) or felt I had to be the peacekeeper between them (so the fighting would stop). It was a tough role to play as a child, especially as a girl. And especially as a sensitive (empath).
Thus I’m here to offer my two cents on this subject in an attempt to expand our consciousness, shed light on why people lie, disagree, or hide parts of themselves–often denying their shadow. Ultimately my aim is to help GROW our souls. And so that while we’re here on this earth plane we can live in peace and understanding. I’m always examining the past to improve the future.
Kaleidoscope Lessons
During one of the Integrating the Spirals session we talk about what we learn from peering into a Kaleidoscope, in particular to resolving differences we feel that come up between friends, family, coworkers, or others we disagree with–because we always want to feel better. Most people do not seek to live in chaos and disharmony, though admittedly some people may find disharmony fun, just as some people love discordant jazz music.
We find through out time with the Kaleidoscope comforting because it reminds us that even broken pieces can fit together, time and time again, and create new and beautiful patterns/designs! It all works, when we work it. Turn, turn, turn. No judgement. No drama. No need to change anyone or anything. Just turn. Or as was said in the movie, Finding Nemo, “just keep swimming, swimming, swimming.”
In another session, I show participants how to find understanding by working with leaves on a tree or handling a mirror ball. In fact, I’ll be talking about that in my next session and will post a new blog article on that tomorrow.
But today, I want to set the stage for that.
Moral ambiguities
One of my favorite TV shows (years ago) was Six Feet Under. Mostly because I was drawn to the family, deep and sharp story lines, and the variety of moral ambiguities explored in each episode. It was quite impactful to me. And I could see why the show won many awards. I was sad to see it end though the finale was one of the best I’ve ever seen.
Another fantastic show was The Sopranos. I never knew anyone in the mob, just like I never knew anyone who ran a funeral home, but that show also became one of my favorites because the main character, Tony Soprano, was brave enough to seek professional help and do some inner work (granted he fought that a lot) but his psychiatrist continually invited him to do introspection work–and breathe whenever he had a panic attack.
More recently, at the urging of a friend we watched Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. We bought the DVDs (of all of these shows), and have watched them over and over. I never thought I could relate (at all) to a chemistry teacher, especially one that became a drug maker and dealer, but alas, I was sucked right in and Jesse became my favorite character. I even liked “say my name” Heisenberg before all was said and done. After it ended I was nearly addicted to Saul Goodman. Ha! I’d love for him to come back and do another season, movie, or such. HE was the “every man” in my humble opinion. Again, the moral ambiguities, the light within the dark, his caring nature with his girlfriend–though he lied to her–was endearing.
My mom used to often say, “he or she could lie easier than tell the truth, though the truth would serve better” about some people. And I think that’s true of many.
Bottom line for me is that most people only want to show others their best side. And thus, that breeds deception. The truth can only be hidden for so long though. Even the really good narcissists typically get found out within a year–or a long road trip.

Cryin’ shame.
What if a rosebud immediately opened and bloomed when you spoke kindly to it? Imagine.
What if ALL businesses closed to “keep us safe,” or “save lives”? Imagine.
What if we save the unborn then created bureaucracy that led their families down a poor economic path, so their choices were limited, or minimal? Imagine.
What if we punished people (to the point of death), when they made mistakes? We do. It’s not right, if we choose Life.
What if you had to choose between a mother’s life and the life of her baby, during the process of birth? Choice happens. No blame.
What if most suffer due to the choices of a few? It happens. Seems insane.
What if a rosebud immediately opened and bloomed when you touched it? Imagine.

Don’t blame, reframe!
Whenever you are ready to blame someone for hurting you, take a breath, take a walk, or sit with the situation for awhile before reacting.
Reframe the event several times to see if you can find where you played a role.
When I have allowed myself to get upset over something, I have found that if I can have a few minutes to an hour alone, without someone taking my side right away, I can usually turn things around in my head and get out of blame. And it feels better to me when I can manage to stop blaming another—and not see myself as the victim.
How to step out of blame
- Breathe
- Take a few moments to change your state
- Take a walk or change your environment
- Consider the situation from another’s viewpoint
- Do something else for a bit
- If possible, message or call the person who caused your upset
- Take a shower
- Meditate or say a prayer (not just about the situation, but for all involved—including you
- Sleep on it

What can you learn from this?
Butterflies signify transformation because of the way they change during their metamorphosis. Try to see if you can find the lesson you can learn from the event you just experienced.
The person that caused your upset may have no idea they upset you. You may merely need a change of perspective. In nearly every case of upset I have experienced, I was too much in my own head about the situation and when I changed my environment (as in walking outside, watching a movie, jumping on a business call, or sleeping on it), I was able to thoroughly change my view of the event and release my hurt feelings.
Ego
Yes, usually our hurt feelings have something to do with our ego. When I’m upset, it’s usually because my ego was bruised in one way or another—even if only a tiny bit.
And I don’t even consider myself to have much of an ego, but apparently I do.
It won’t hurt me to let go of more ego either. When we can embrace humility, it can help us stand more confidently. We can accept that we have a lot to offer others, in service—whether we are praised or not.
When people talk bad about you
I know it feels painful when someone talks bad about you. But would you rather be right, or feel good? If we want to feel better, reframing the situation can help.
I have had these situations occur in my life. I don’t blame the people (because to do so would put me in victim mode), but I have used those episodes to help me make better choices.
I used to shake my head before walking away, but I don’t do that anymore—because even that is a waste of my energy. I say to myself, they just aren’t on the same wavelength as me. Sometimes I teach by sharing, but mostly I just let it go. ❤️🦋🌀😉
