It’s February 23rd, 2024; Here’s an original song in the rock and blues music genre. The lyrics are tongue-in-cheek about aging. It talks about some of the ways in which we reach for items to help us feel better as we begin to feel the effects of aging. It’s a fun romp and hope you enjoy it.

The more fun we can have, the better!

Here’s the fifty-fourth new music post for 2024, as I consistently provide you with a new original song each day. This is one of my favorite Richard Murrey original songs because of the rock and blues influence, beat, and lyrics that help us think lighter and feel better about growing old. Maybe I enjoy this because I still feel relatively good at 62. Of course, I just did a blog post (and video on Facebook) about my stiff joints (fingers and knees) and how I resolved those issues. But nonetheless, compared to some other folks around my age, I feel I’m doing pretty good!

Guitar riffs

What do you think about the guitar riffs in this song? To your ear, is it more rock than blues? Music is subjective and we know each of you will enjoy this song (or not) for different reasons. But we’d love to hear what you think of it. Does it help you not feel so ‘over the hill’?

As well, we’d love to hear how you buy and consume music these days. We’ve been giving out some CDs and folks have told us they prefer plugging in a USB thumb drive (or flash drive) into their TV or computer to play music. So, Richard put together an ad for his songs. As a graphics artist, he designed this ad and all of the CD covers shown in it (and you also see these on the YouTube videos I’m sharing each day). But we don’t know if the ad lands well, as few have emailed Richard. Perhaps we need a ‘buy now’ button? What do you think?

Richard’s ad for our original music

May we all feel freer and soar in ’24! And here’s to improving our mental and physical health by integrating processes that bring us more calm, ease, and JOY!

Yours in expanding, rocking’, aging, spiraling consciousness,

Sheila “Spiral Sister” Murrey

      1. Ah, I could have worked longer, but I started working at age 15 part-time and felt I wanted some of this social security I have paid into (over 40 years full-time) before it goes dry! Life’s short!
Plus, my dad passed before he turned 80 and always told me to retire by age 62. He had done the math, and so did I, and by 80 years of age we break even.

      2. That’s food for thought. Since I came to the UK as a student when I was 25 and didn’t start working full time till I was 26, I may have to work a little longer, unfortunately.

  1. Enjoying both the different music tunes and vibes alongside the observational lyrics too. Yesterday’s Honky Tonk was a good listen. Different feel to another song, but the words Honky Tonk reminded me of the song Honky Tonk Angels. I loved the Status Quo version and have heard a country version too. Not sure who did it though. Cheers for these both. All the best.

    1. Observational lyrics, yes! Thank you so much, Gray. As a fellow musician your thoughts (and comments) are always appreciated. I don’t know if I have heard Honky Tonk Angels and will need to search that.
FYI: I don’t know if you like Julian Lennon but I just finished watching him on Club Random. I didn’t know he had to change the order of his first names but found that interesting:

      1. I do like Julian. Watched a YouTube video a few weeks back regarding the relationship between him and Sean being good. I’ll watch this tomorrow. Maybe in a few stints though as it being the length it is. Watched a few minutes just now and looks good vibes. Thanks for the link Sheila.

      2. Yeah, he speaks about Sean in this a bit too and I am excited that they are considering doing something together sooner rather than later!
I know Bill Maher can get controversial but in this particular Random he took it easier. I was also proud of Julian for not imbibing during their talk. Showing it is possible while conversing with Maher (or anyone drinking).

      3. I enjoyed the exchange because of following his career. He has stayed true to his words back then. Pirates shot him into global status of recognition. He took the role of Captain Jack Sparrow to leave as a legacy to his children. Even that character he played with the portrayal of how Jack would be as a pirate. Disney were reluctant and scared he’d messed up. The rest is history. He’s back doing small independent films again, of which he spoke in that interview. Just finished directing a film about the artist Modigliani and acting in a French film called Jeanne du Barry playing King Louis. He speaks French in a film full of French actors. And is supposed to be amazing. It’s released here in the UK soon. But has been well received around the World so far. Johnny is painting, singing, acting, directing and generally full on busy. Richard must have Kentucky genetics then. Artists of great talent are born there.

      4. You are so well-researched on Johnny Depp, Gray! I bet you would love to sit down and have a Club Random kind of chat with him! Ha!
Yes, after working at Disney for a year (several years ago), I have lost any love I had for them (long story), so I am glad Johnny stuck by the character of Jack Sparrow he created and made them sweat! Ha! Good on him! Also, I didn’t know (until watching this interview) that he crafted the Edward Scissorhands character (that Tim let him be and didn’t rehearse Johnny as he had the rest of the cast). That was a brilliant move.
I agree about great artists coming from Kentucky. Cheers, Gray!

      5. It’s Edward Scissorhands and my children’s reaction that got me into Johnny. My own reaction too. I cried at the end. Then Benny and Joon and What’s eating Gilbert Grape followed and was hooked. After that it was just collecting videos/DVDs (he’s made approx 70 films but I haven’t counted). Best was going to the cinema and watching on the big screen with the kids. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was a blast. Disney is definitely not the Disney myself and the children enjoyed way back a few years now. They have taken iconic themes like Star Wars and ruined them! You are right with his relationship with Tim Burton. Always something interesting results. Sweeney Todd is a masterpiece. Cheers Sheila.

      6. Ah, had a long reply written and lost it.
Your soft underbelly was showing at the end of Scissorhands. Aww!
        And I understand.
I never saw Benny and Joon.
Gilbert Grape is one of my all-time favorites for Leo DiCaprio and Juliette Lewis—and the whole travel RV concept. So sad about their mom.
I bet you do have a lot of his DVDs!
We have several. Disney burned my boss and coworker for NO REASON after I left. They were both full-time cast members with all the perks. They forced them to train their Indian replacements (whole crew), to receive severance. Real shitty.
We used to have annual passes to the Orlando parks and went often (for years). Funny how one’s perspective can vastly change.
        Star Wars. Agreed!
I had to hide my eyes many times during Sweeney Todd and we just watched an old J. Lo/Ben Affleck movie where their daughter did a scene from Todd as her school play. The teacher’s face when they slit the throat was priceless! Forget the name of that.

      7. Leonardo won an award didn’t he for that performance? And I have every single DVD of Johnny’s films. Even the ones where has a bit part. This Disney explanation you wrote here? That is an appalling thing to do. I can’t stand the corporate bullying from above. Cruel and heartless. Johnny has been speaking in interviews recently about people having to fall into line. He says ‘Not for me. I’ll be seeing you on the other side’. You should get some of his famous quotes. He has much humour alongside very profound thoughts. Clever guy. I’ll have to look at the J. Lo/Ben Affkeck movie. Sounds cool. Cheers Sheila. Thank you.

      8. I was appalled at the Disney fiasco too. It was illegal and they were sued. They paid off the Orlando Sentinel newspaper to keep the scandal hidden for a year. But all the IT people in central Florida knew and when recruiters began calling me to go back, I told them why I wouldn’t—and when they weren’t shocked, I knew they had known. It was horrendous. I still know a couple people there, but they won’t talk. And that’s okay. That’s on them. I take a harder line. My one friend who was laid off, he got a better job elsewhere and has “let it go.” He suggested I do the same. I had it rough there and I guess I still hold a grudge. I know that only hurts me. A corporate beast doesn’t care.
As for Leo, he has been snubbed by the awards people sooo many times, I’ve lost count. I don’t think he won anything for Grape, but finally for Revenant.
I am even more impressed with Johnny since watching this interview you shared when she asked him if he had worked with any mean directors and he had but didn’t name names. He said he told at least one to limit words to him to Action, Cut, and Print and that’s it, no more. Ha! That’s balls. Love it.

      9. We have too many in management telling those on the ‘shop’ floor what to do. Artistically and technically people know their jobs. Being told how to do your job with no common sense attached or research back up is a huge problem. I didn’t watch beyond the first episode of a new drama called ‘Breathtaking’. The subject is the Covid outbreak and a hospital scenario. Angie watched all the episodes. It spoke volumes of how the people on the floor (doctors, nurses, etc.) were told what to do by the upper echelons. They could see the weaknesses in advice, the lack of PPE, and weren’t listened to. I remember our community rallying around and making things for us to protect us because we had very little. We couldn’t use it. Not NHS approved. So much historical information over centuries across how workers are viewed in many arenas in life. I’m a Buddhist by nature. Not on full on practice, but it is ‘base’. There is much to be viewed when looking at balance to life when my head is in its philosophy.

Johnny has never won an Oscar and guess what? He doesn’t care. 😆. I do wonder which director it is too. Cheers Sheila.

      10. I love that too, that Johnny doesn’t care about winning an Oscar. He might prefer a Grammy anyway for a song one day. Ha!
I so understand, Gray. I am a Daoist/Buddhist by nature. And probably a shaman/witch too. Physicist. Ha! My interest in ALL natural phenomenon is deep.
I will look for that Breathtaking show.
