Less than one year here and we are moving again. We are leaving Ocala, Florida

Yes sadly, we are moving again—in less than a year of living in Ocala, Florida. And this is a big move! We are leaving Florida. The state Richard and I have lived for 40 years. But we’re very excited to be going to New England and get to live next door to our family!! If you would rather listen instead of read, play the audio:

Why are we moving again so soon–what’s gone wrong?

Let me know if this list is too harsh for me to post (after we move) as a review of the apartment complex. They’ve been asking for tenants to leave reviews for the complex on Google but I’ve hesitated to leave a bad review, since A) I don’t want to be THAT person, and B) I didn’t want to cast any more negativity on the community as they’ve already brought upon themselves. Thank you in advance!

  • Neighbors – Our upstairs neighbors are quite heavy-footed as they walk around in the upstairs apartment. I waited three months after we moved in to complain as I thought it may take them time to adjust to apartment living. Sadly, things never got any better. This has been an untenable situation. Yet apparently, due to the Federal Fair Housing Act, the apartment community cannot assign people to particular apartments based on age, working hours, or whatnot. These younger tenants work nights (or something) because they come in between 11 pm-1 am every night and then leave around 4-5 am in the mornings! They slam the door. They stomp up and down the stairs. They drop things on their floor, which sounds like a bowling ball hit our ceiling. I have literally jumped when this has happened! They have had yelling matches. They had their loud Dodge Charger car backed into the parking space in front of our bedroom window and left it running while going back upstairs to get things before leaving!
  • Apartment Community – We enjoyed paying our rent and sending communication to the office via an online portal, but shortly after we moved in the community closed the pool area for nearly six months (to rip up every bit of poured concrete around the pool and resurface it) with no reduction in rent. The pool has now reopened (we’ve yet to use it) and it IS beautiful, but we didn’t think anything looked wrong with it before.
  • Apartment Community Signage – Every time someone (either our Kroger grocery delivery or Uber/Lyft driver) tries to find us, there’s no signage anywhere within the apartment community to direct drivers to where each building is, much less where each apartment number is within a building. I had to update this post to add this to our list of negatives about living here because we just had another Kroger delivery driver lament about how he’d driven round and round and some of the building numbers are on the backside of the buildings! Granted some of the drivers are working their first delivery job, but even our very experienced Lyft driver turned the wrong way and came back by our apartment after dropping us off a week ago as there are no exit signs in this place! There are a couple of signs that point one to the leasing office, but that’s it. I imagine the office would say that each delivery driver could stop in the office to ask where the apartment is that they’re delivery to but we all know most won’t take the time to do that (until they become exasperated trying to find us). And yes, I have (each time) added details to our orders to state how the driver can find us, but often they enter from the opposite entry than the one my directions are from and there’s limited characters for me to instruct them from both directions. A few signs would certainly ease a lot of people’s frustrations, as some of the large building numbers are on the backside of the buildings. Something I didn’t realize until one of the Kroger drivers first told me and then I had to look at each building after that to confirm to myself.
  • Apartment Community Mail/Business Center – The office staff has changed and not for the better. The office put in a new locker room for package pick-up, so we rarely even go into the office anymore to enjoy the way they remodeled it (having completed that project just before we moved in). On one occasion, we had needed to use the business center (which was an amenity I had very much wanted that we didn’t have in Bradenton) and it was such a joke because the new printer wasn’t yet connected to either of the two computers. Purposely, I’d waited to try and print there for a month after the remodel so I wouldn’t run into these kinds of issues. The office manager had me use her computer as a workaround to print my mailing labels and lists. Also, the mail carrier won’t pick up any packages for mailing out. We had to catch him (to give him a small package) as he was delivering mail to the Italian restaurant where we happened to be dining! I have no idea why, but the apartment community office does not want people to leave packages there for the mail carrier to pick up.
  • Parking – We don’t have a car (so I have no idea why they put us in an apartment on the parking side of our building when we could have been in the back), at least this does help delivery drivers find us once they find our building. But about a month ago a tow truck dropped a car in front of our living room window and didn’t even park it correctly, which was a nuisance to see. When we complained about it not belonging to anyone here, as it has no community parking decal, the apartment office manager quipped it must belong to someone because they fixed the tire! She (Ms. Personality) thoroughly missed the point and could have cared less! As I finished recording this, the upstairs neighbor called a locksmith, got into the car, disconnected the battery when the car alarm went off, and has now, driven away in the car! Whether he figured out how to buy it from a finance company or whether he stole it, we don’t know and don’t care! Ha!
  • Overall Community Appearance – We were in the community office one day and overheard a lovely little old lady complaining (to a younger office staff lady who seemed to have cared less) about some of the things we’d witnessed too. We had not complained (about those items) because we didn’t feel the office would do anything about it. We’ve seen trash lying all around the community as we walk to the mail center, grocery store, and restaurants. We have seen overflowing dumpsters. We have seen huge piles of dog poo where people haven’t picked that up (and we could tell it was all from the same dog as it was near one apartment near the sidewalk and all three piles close together). Yuck! People still speed though the community newsletter begs people monthly to adhere to the 10mph speed limit—the community should put in speed bumps! We needed that a whole lot more than a package delivery system and pool area! I hate to complain because I know we can’t control other people, much less change their behavior. We simply model good behavior, respectful and polite, and try to inspire others (though there is some sense of control involved even in that, I realize).

Mind-Body

I am not of a mind to ‘give up’ but as I just said, there’s only so much we can do. And I must draw a line on how much Energy I expend to try to continue living here. As it’s turned out, living here has not helped my mental health much, because the people we moved here to meet up with have not been able (yet) to make time for us. I am still hopeful that we’ll meet a couple of them during April! And I’m fine with continuing to peel layers of the onion and feel better even if we don’t get to meet up. I know wherever we go we take ourselves with us! Ha! And I know everyone is fighting some kind of battle we know nothing about. Tada!

I’m incorporating lessons learned (from our move here)

  • I have secured a Budget rental truck for a week (no more U-Haul!)
  • I put our furniture on NextDoor for sale and posted an ad for local loading help
  • I sent our Notice to Vacate to our apartment community as soon as I knew what date we could move into the apartment next to my daughter
  • I’ve made a checklist of all we need to do before we move, which seems much shorter than the list I had when we left Bradenton last August.
Broyhill solid cherry wood credenza (empty) we’re selling. (TV not included.)
I’m going to give the bookcase (empty) to whoever buys the credenza if they want it.
We’re selling the computer desk too (empty–computer not included) or seeing if the consignment store in town (where we bought it and the credenza) will take it and put it up for sale.

All in all, we’re feeling a bit better and able to load the Budget rental truck and hopefully, the loading help will show up; here’s a link to my NextDoor event and I’m already getting some offers of help! Yippee! I’m certainly hoping for that. If not, we’ll take our time and load it over two days as needed. We’re going to give ourselves a lot more love and self-care this time!

I also just noticed that our apartment number equals 8. And 8 is the number for infinity but also of COMPLETION! Woo-hoo! Perhaps our run of ill karma regarding places we’ve lived has been completed. I’m certainly considering it so!

Enjoy (IN Joy) and have fun! Be Everything All the Time.

May we all soar in ’24! Here’s to loving ourselves more, expanding our consciousness, living without regrets, and living FREE!

Integrating the Spirals to ease suffering

My online Zoom video course, Integrating the Spirals is helpful now more than ever because I know people are suffering. (Let me know if you’re interested in the Integrating the Spirals course.)

As an empath I want to help ease suffering and raise hope. I want to uplift others and raise our collective vibrations and consciousness. I teach breath work and meditation so we appreciate the value of Detachment. We till our inner soil with our breath and that offers us peace and calm. Meditation is an easy way to Connect us with spirit, higher selves, Omniscience God, and receive personal guidance.

Be the best version of who you want to be–because if you’re reading my words your soul is probably beckoning you to align with it and live up to your highest ideals. January 25th – A traditional country song

It’s January 25th, 2024; Big surprise! A traditional country song about turning the clock around to be last night. A love song with a twist. He wants to find a way to get back to her last night because she turned his heart around.

Turning back time

Here’s the twenty-fifth new music post for 2024, as I consistently offer original songs for you each day this year. This is definitely a traditional country song. The bartender mixes his drink “too strong.” And then he wants to turn back time. “Hey, is that me coming in the door?” he asks. There’s no reason or rhyme why we can’t stop time. He croons about Time Travel, and yes, he goes on a spoken rant about it too! Ha! You gotta check it out!

Live performances

We went out for some Live music last night. We heard Stephen Lopez play guitar and sing like Elvis at our favorite local Italian restaurant. See my Google review of Milano’s:

We met some new folks at the bar and enjoyed some great drinks, wonderful food, and socialization. I feel sorry for those who still feel the need to stay home. We actually moved to the particular apartment community we’re in now because of the diner, grocery store with pharmacy, credit union, and doctor we can walk to, but finding Milano’s was a lovely surprise!

My dinner (plus a side salad with house garlic dressing, not pictured because I ate it too fast):

Scallops with Lobster sauce and grilled asparagus appetizer!

Radio-ready songs

All the songs I’m sharing are radio-ready, sung by pro singers, and recorded by top music studios in Nashville, TN. We are songwriters currently based in Ocala, Florida. Scroll down for the Vimeo link in the About Us section of this post to see us perform one of our original songs.

May we all soar in ’24!

Yes, our songs are on Spotify

It’s funny. Many of our original songs have been on CDBaby and TuneCore for years. So, some of the songs are on Spotify at different locations. The key when you’re searching is to look for ‘Richard Murrey’ as the artist, OR ‘Chevy Ford Band.’ Let me know if that’s helpful. Here are a couple of links to our songs that I found on Spotify:

What we are enjoying since moving to Ocala, Florida

Here’s what we are enjoying since moving to Ocala, Florida. If you would rather listen instead of read, play the audio:

After one week here we are really grateful for:

  • No traffic noise! When nothing is on (no TV, videos, or music) in our new apartment, we hear NOTHING from outside and we love it! (I couldn’t sleep for weeks/months in Bradenton due to the bad windows and all the ambulance sirens, etc. and people peeling out at the stop light near us, etc.) I was really seeking quiet. And it seems I got it now.
  • We really love our “new to us” furniture we bought here. Since we’re minimalists, we buy used whenever possible. I ordered an Amish step stool from Etsy (UPDATE: added the picture); I needed one to reach the top kitchen cabinets and place our pictures on top
  • We love the Italian restaurant in the plaza we can walk to and made a reservation for tomorrow night to celebrate my darling husband’s birthday. Their pizza is the best we have had since Disney (The Italy country in Epcot).
  • We met an excellent driver who will take us anywhere, for less than he charges on Uber and Lyft
  • We’re so happy with these like-new appliances and like-new bathroom sink and tub that actually works (versus the old ones that wouldn’t drain at the former place)

Mental health

I am much calmer and clear about some things but yes, wherever we go we take ourselves with us! Ha! I wish we had found this place a year ago, but I know better than to get into “would’ve, could’ve, should’ve” thinking. Perhaps my husband wouldn’t have had a stroke in Oct. 2022. Ugh. I still blame hurricane Ian for hubby overexerting himself during the days after the hurricane when we had no power.

Ah, but live in the now. Breathe deep. Let all that OLD go! Whew!

Now, I am living in utter GRATITUDE and honoring my intuition and psychic abilities since I had felt for months that we needed to move on 8/21 and hurricane Idalia hit today, 8/30!

I am feeling very empowered having bought 3 new styles of ear plugs since we have upstairs neighbors who are not used to apartment living yet (and have heavy feet). Otherwise our new place is 100% quieter than where we moved from! And we love it!

New used furniture

Broyhill cherry wood console – aka “my coffin” as it weighs as much as me and thought it might be the death of us getting it the apartment! I trust the Broyhill name as my parents always had Broyhill furniture since I was a child. Paying homage to them and it will remind me of them everyday!
Getting books put away
Kitchen is done now and I still have empty cabinets. Woo-hoo! New barstools too. Hubby put those together.
Amish step stool crafted from reclaimed wood
I flipped empty plastic totes upside down and covered with a favorite cloth to make a plant stand/altar.
My side of the bedroom and how I temporarily organized things until the cubes I ordered the other day arrives.
We put our car window shades between the front bedroom window and blinds to keep that room darker and cooler. Again, I turned empty totes upside down to use as makeshift tables for stuff.
One tote outside that I’m using as a plant stand; I planted seeds already. Onion and sage.

All in all, we’re very happy to be here and feel healthier every day from all the walking we are doing.

My 4th book is on Amazon and you can get it here: Have Yourself a Wholly Vibrant Life: Reversing Asthma and Other Chronic Illness Naturally

For more updates, how we like living in Ocala, Florida and more, follow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/takeonyour

We have arrived! Our first week living in Ocala, Florida

Here’s a run down from our move to Ocala, Florida. We are loving Ocala already! If you would rather listen instead of read, play the audio:

First impressions:

  • Furniture – We lived in an RV for 11 years and then a furnished condo for 2 years, so while we are minimalists, we still needed a few pieces of furniture. We got a great deal on two twin mattresses at the first store we visited ($250 each!) and the next day we found a huge furniture consignment store and made offers on a computer desk and leather Serta office chair, and Broyhill console for our TV. Yes, we had bought a new TV 2 years ago for the condo since the one that was there didn’t work right or we couldn’t figure it out. We also ordered two barstools from Amazon for the bar/raised kitchen counter.
  • Doctor – We’re very happy with Richard’s new doc and I’ll be seeing her as well, whenever needed. She took Richard’s blood and sent it off to a lab for results to come in a few days. We are self pay currently and she only charged us $79 and gave us all the lab fees for the blood tests up front too so there were no surprises at the check out counter. I’ll be writing another article about her so watch for that if you want to know.
  • Grocery store – We can walk to a Publix and that was the prime reason we chose this apartment community (along with their amenities, beautiful grounds with large oaks, unit floorpan, and availability of a ground floor unit). Publix is employee-owned.
  • Restaurants – We love the Italian restaurant and diner next to the Publix! Great customer service and selection of food. The food has been hot and delicious. Plus we have a Subway in the plaza too and the Publix deli. Of course I cook–(but not this week as I’m on vacation).
  • Banking – I started a new account for us at one of the two credit unions here in the plaza. They are not planning on joining the Central Banking Digital Currency (CBDC) thing and are owned by members headquartered in Lakeland, FL with branches all over Florida. They even offer a high-rate Certificate of Deposit that is now paying over 5% interest! We were treated very well and got our new account setup within an hour (though we did have to walk home and back to get our lease to prove our new address). Two banks failed in California recently so I really wanted to move our funds to a safer place and we’ve always loved credit unions.
  • Apartment Community – The community had a food truck come in yesterday and that was such a treat! We’ve never had that before! We didn’t have anyone help us unload our stuff on Monday or furniture on Tuesday but I asked and that’s what was important. Mostly as you know, I’m very self sufficient. I noticed several people wearing ear buds so that’s why a few didn’t help because they didn’t even hear me ask. I also asked the guys at the furniture store but no one had time or knew anyone to refer us to call.
  • Neighbors – Our upstairs neighbors were moving in on the same day too so they couldn’t help. And they haven’t learned how to walk in an upstairs apartment. I will wait to see if this improves or we adjust before I say anything about this though. Update 3/25/24: this never got better so we are moving. Yes, again. This has been untenable and apparently, due to the Federal Fair Housing Act, the apartment community cannot assign people to particular apartments based on age, working hours, or what not.
  • Parking – We don’t have a car and don’t plan to so we have no issues with that. Though our bedroom is in the front of the unit by the parking lot so our neighbor wakes me up at 5am every morning when he starts his Charger. Go figure. Ha!

Mind-Body

It seems man always has a problem describing or explaining quantum mechanics while Nature simply plays it out intrinsically, organically. We can move our fingers, and whole body, in a wave-like fashion and observe our own movements. We don’t need to know the speed of light or how it’s measured in order to do this. We don’t have to know or understand wave function collapse. Any child can strum their fingers on a desk (or in the air) simulating a wave by moving each finger up and down incrementally one after another, and indeed they always have. No knowledge of physics is needed.

I’ll write another article on my mental health observations regarding moving as I already feel layers of the onion peeling away. I noticed yesterday I am much calmer and clear about some things but yes, wherever we go we take ourselves with us! Ha!

U-Haul missteps

  • Incorrect store location sent to me via confirmation email
  • Incorrect store opening time sent to me in ALL communications right from the start as well as in confirmation messages
  • Improper coordination with third-party moving helpers via the U-Haul application and that you have to pay in advance to reserve that help but if they cancel or cannot fulfill their service, they have 3-7 days to return your money! If someone is short on funds they then cannot try to schedule an alternative moving helper company because they will also have to pay in advance for them (while still waiting on the first company to refund their money)!
  • I’ve sent a review to U-Haul but may also send screen captures of the communications to them at a later date (I’m not sure it’s worth my time/energy)
  • Thankfully, the U-Haul location for the truck drop-off went well and the lady there, Carla, was quite nice and welcomed us to our new home. Also our Lyft driver from there back to Publix was a retired state trooper from the Virgin Islands and super nice—we even discussed a potential tutoring job for me!
Broyhill cherry wood console – aka “my coffin” as it weighs as much as me and thought it might be the death of us getting it the apartment! I trust the Broyhill name as my parents always had Broyhill furniture since I was a child. Paying homage to them and it will remind me of them everyday!
$40 wood bookcase from Goodwill. I am still arranging things so it will be full of books soon. Hubby has to find new place for his CD player.
Hubby’s new used computer desk and leather office chair from the best consignment store in town.
Got 2 of these. Yes, we are leaving them on the floor.

All in all, we’re sore from doing all of the unloading and walking, but we’re very happy to be here and feel a complete sense of accomplishment getting so much done on our own. Next time, if we ever move again, we’ll hire movers. Ha!

My 4th book is on Amazon!! And here’s how you can read it: Have Yourself a Wholly Vibrant Life: Reversing Asthma and Other Chronic Illness Naturally

To our better health, ease, joy, and sustainment in JOY!

Sheila “Spiral Sister” Murrey

Moving to Ocala, Florida – Final check list

Here’s my final check list of To Do’s and how ready and excited we are to move to Ocala, Florida. Even if we don’t like Ocala, I do not plan on ever moving back to south Florida–too hot and too much hurricane stress. Yes, hurricanes can impact all of Florida, as well as Georgia, North and South Carolina and all along the eastern seaboard. Plus, Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Texas. If you would rather listen instead of read, play the audio:

As we are in the final days before moving, I have the final check list of To Do’s to complete:

  • DONE – Submit change of address to the local USPS
  • DONE – Request our electricity be changed from my name back to condo owners
  • DONE – Disconnected internet service (cable) on 8/21
  • DONE – Return the community clubhouse/pool key (on the Friday before we leave)
  • DONE – Return condo keys back to Realtor managing the unit (following her instructions)

Upon leaving the unit:

  • DONE – Put chairs back where they were when we moved in
  • DONE – Wipe down all counters and tables
  • DONE – Sweep all floors
  • DONE – Take out the trash
  • DONE – Check the laundry pair to ensure I have removed all clothing
  • DONE – Turn out all lights/and ensure fans are off
  • DONE – Turn up AC thermostat to 88
  • DONE – Unplug microwave
  • Took video of the place clean
  • DONE – Have to drop internet equipment at UPS store in Bradenton before leaving town

We have talked about any last things we want to do while in Bradenton, such as places we want to go eat or shop, friends (any who care would need to come and see us), and we think we are good with what all we have done and seen.

There’s our favorite, Poppi’s Restaurant (they have the best fried fish and grits), Cremesh bakery/cafe we only recently discovered, and the European Deli “A Taste of Europe” in Sarasota. I am hopeful we will find good alternatives of these in Ocala.

At some point one simply has to be okay with the “been there, done that” stuff and call it a day. We have offered friends many opportunities to see us and if they couldn’t make time, it is what it is. I will not harbor resentment, but it shows us where we rate in their lives. It’s okay.

I think these are similar to the thoughts one has before dying. a song comes to mind: We may never pass this way again. Seals & Crofts.

Final walk through

  • Ensure I didn’t forget anything
  • Take video of how we’re leaving the unit

Special thanks to Robyn Openshaw who told me of another medical doctor (who is a Health Freedom advocate) we could see in Ocala.

And thanks to my friend, Karen P. for driving from St. Pete to visit us, enjoy a meal out, and for bringing a key lime pie. As well as gifting me with the fresh avocado and mango (I ate today!) and for our walk to my special grandmother Banyan tree:

Not perfect because who is perfect? Most stagnate or ‘get stuck’ while on their way to being whatever they think perfection is. Making progress is enough. Carrying your Karma lightly is enough. Be kind to yourself while living responsibly. Who you ARE affects us ALL. We Are All Connected.

Omniscience knows ALL. Omniscience is always with you. You are never alone.

Moving to Ocala, Florida – Update and Prep work

Here’s an update that includes my prep work (list of To Do’s) regarding our impending move to Ocala, Florida. If you would rather listen instead of read, play the audio:

As mentioned previously, we chose an apartment community 3 to 5 miles from downtown Ocala, so we could live within walking distance to grocery stores and eateries. We were prepared to apply to both our top choices of communities (just in case for any reason one didn’t accept us). Thankfully, we were accepted by the one with the amenities we liked best and in the best location to meet our needs (namely, within the shortest walking distance to the stores, doctors office, banking, and eateries we liked). The application, check in, monthly rental payments and such are all done online too, which I love, because we have had many issues at our current place of rent checks (yes, even paying via Bill Pay) get lost, not cashed, etc. and nothing irritates me more than paying before or on the due date and the people not getting the money for 10 days to two weeks through no fault of ours!

I have our electricity, water/sewer, and internet services all set to turn on for our new apartment soon too (we move 8/21/23), so we will see how it goes. I still need to put in our change of address notice with the post office, but I think by this point in time, I have everything done that needs to be done. I have the U-haul truck and two helpers hired. I will drive the moving truck myself with hubby by my side. I think once we get everything packed into the truck we’ll see how much more we want to buy at the new place in order to keep future moves also to a minimum.

We have packed about 85% of everything and are waiting until the last 3-4 days before moving day to complete the rest. I think of it like packing for a trip or vacation but in reverse. Everything I use daily, will go into my suitcase the day before we get the rental moving truck. I’ll take an Uber or Lyft to the U-haul dealer.

I have also pre-cleaned the current place a lot and will do more of that the last few days so that once all our boxes and totes are out, it won’t take me long to do one final wipe-down and broom or vacuum and call it done. Mind you, this place wasn’t all that clean when we moved in so I will leave it at least the same or better. It’s furnished (I had never rented a furnished apartment before in my life) but they had never moved and cleaned under anything, which has always bothered me. I didn’t know initially until I dropped something at one point and it rolled under the bed. UGH

The owner never steam cleaned the couch or such either so I always had a sheet covering it (they disagreed but I felt there were blood stains on the couch cushions too, so that’s another reason I covered it). Anyway, I know one person’s idea of “clean” can vary drastically from another’s, and so again, it is what it is. I’ll take a video when we leave just to ensure I can prove how we left it should any questions arise.

Summary

  • I can let go (deep breath here) of all low vibes I have had about living in Bradenton (I never wanted to live here but it was cheap rent and available at least for one year) back when we had looked for a place in St. Pete/Gulfport and could not find anything reasonable or available. Some places were only available during part of a year, and lots of small houses, duplexes, or such went on AirBnB, so there’s that.
  • I’m glad our new place won’t have GPS issues (it’s been hard for people to find our current place for deliveries), So many times, drivers have had to text me to find us at this place in town, which I certainly never expected. I guess the city of Bradenton never thought their addressing scheme out very well back in the day. (After having delivery issues when we lived in the woods “off grid” before moving here, that had been one issues I’d never expected to have, living in a city.
  • I’m glad our new place won’t have mail issues (some of our mail went to another near identical address here and thankfully, those folks were nice and brought our mail over to us when it would get delivered to them). Our new apartment community has a mail center where packages are received. And the address is super easy to find for visitors via GPS.
  • I’m looking forward to taking a bath at the new apartment too! The current old iron tub has a rusted out spot and hole in it so I couldn’t take baths here, only showers.
  • I can release negative feelings I have had about no one visiting us in two years (of “friends” (who live here) who we used to know and see a lot but apparently quit caring about us after we moved away (for work back in 2017). So be it.
  • I can look onwards and upwards. Two years here has been more than enough and that last hurricane (Ian), pushed me over the edge as far as dealing with power outages was concerned. Yes, I realize that’s a first world country problem but we did our 17 months living off grid during 2020-2021 and we are sooo over that!
  • I’m looking forward to using new appliances too at the new apartment–everything here is old, hence the cheap rent I suppose.
  • I can focus my energy on making new acquaintances and friends and seeing new sights. As well, we will be two hours closer to northern destinations I want to visit soon! Two hours closer to getting out of the state should we need to.
  • I love the hills and lay of the land in Ocala too.
  • I love the arts community in Ocala also.
  • I love horses. I grew up with horses and worked with an equestrian photographer years ago too, so I am hoping I can do something there related with the equine industry. I am asking the Universe to surprise me!
  • I am also hoping it is more quiet there, though I am sure the trade off will be between the all ages community we will be in versus the 55-plus community we are in now, and also we will have someone living above us. But there’s going to be major road work going on where we are at currently and I didn’t want to be here when it ramps up with milling and paving happening for weeks/months! This condo has poor windows and doors and we can hear everything outside and are close to a four-lane street that will get widened.

I feel Ocala will present us with a lot of adventure, with more natural springs to explore, horses to view or ride (I am looking forward to visiting the World Equestrian Center (WEC), and see how folks of all ages accept our original music in Ocala (as Richard already asked if he could play guitar at the apartment community pool and was told he could), so we shall envision success there!

Apartment hunting in Ocala, Florida

Since the last hurricane (last year—when our power was out for 8 days!), I have been telling myself and talking about moving to a more northern inland part of Florida and eyeing the Ocala area. It seems I am not alone! Ocala is growing by leaps and bounds! If you would rather listen instead of read, play the audio:

Months ago I had put together a short list of communities to visit, not only in Ocala, but in areas in between Dunedin and Brooksville too, because we have liked things about both of those areas. But the hills of Ocala still pulled me thus, I wanted to at least honor my feelings and come stay for three or four days and give it time and space to see what we might like.

My darling husband found us an Airbnb (which used to be a Bed and Breakfast—no breakfast anymore), and it has been lovely! Even a problem with its fire alarm worked to our advantage yesterday. I’ll explain later.

Here’s what I have found so far, and how I kept track because somehow I didn’t have a pen to mark my paper list, I know, ha, a writer without a pen! LOL

Nope.

We want amenities and these kinds of places don’t have any, or were not within walking distance to food or grocery stores, which since we no longer have a car (we rented one for this trip), we know is something we want.

Yay!! Possibilities!

I used my maps app to locate apartment communities and drive by, or tour, open units. This worked out fairly well as the list stayed in my app so after we left one place I could quickly move on the next closest one. The blue dot is our Airbnb and starting point and we came back to rest midday. We aren’t used to being out running around all day anymore and found ourselves getting tired!

Most won’t know what units will be available yet, as we aren’t moving until August, but at least we have a feel for what we like, what prices we are going to be paying, etc. And that’s all I anticipated from this trip.

I’d love to rent something near downtown but I haven’t seen anything like that yet. Nor do we want to climb stairs.

This is the beautiful Airbnb we are staying at, and learning/confirming stairs won’t work for us.

Yesterday was our first full day of looking and we thought we would come back to our Airbnb room and take a nap or at least relax. Nooooo! The fire alarm started blaring and we had to run out of the house! We also weren’t sure if there was a fire, so, uh, yeah. But our superhost had warned us and asked if his inspector could come into our room at 10am—I had said yes, because we were out galavanting. By 1:30pm I thought it would be safe to return. Nope!

We sat on the huge front porch for half an hour and it never stopped! I called our superhost and no answer, nor did he call me right back which I thought odd, but figured he might already be on the phone with the monitor company, fire department, or what not. Found out later he was on a flight back here from Boston!

Anyway, we took the alarm as a sign and went back out apartment shopping. I found two I really liked! We came back again at 3:30, after our superhost called us back, and all was well. We got to meet our hosts son-in-law also, who lives a few blocks away and was here to ensure the alarm was silenced. He was extremely nice and when I explained why we were in town and what we were looking for, he offered to help. He fortuitously works with attorneys for apartment community builders! Ha! Fantastic!

To be continued…

Oh, yeah! My 4th book is now on Amazon!! Yippee!! Here’s the link: https://www.amazon.com/Have-Yourself-Wholly-Vibrant-Life-ebook/dp/B0C3QK7FKV/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?crid=3HETKY07S7JRR&keywords=have+yourself+a+wholly&qid=1682764856&sprefix=have+yourself+a+wholly%2Caps%2C214&sr=8-1
