I went on a field trip today with several new friends from my Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) group to Spanish Point in Osprey, Florida a bit south of Sarasota.

I didn’t know much about the place or what I might see and was definitely delighted by the guided tour and butterflies! ❤️🦋🌀

Waterview
Ponytail palm tree
Flowers, fountain, pergola
Sign showing Daughters of American Revolution as sponsors
One original column remains the rest was rebuilt
The guide asked what animal the trunk looked like, several answered an elephant!
Growing as nature intends
Beautiful tops
We learned how the Webbs sorted oranges by size for packing and shipping—rolled down the table, small oranges would fall into the first crate, medium into the second, and large into the last. Ingenious!
The mound or midden where approximately 450 native Americans’ bones were discovered
Ancient people
Found here
Information
Inside the fifteen foot wall of trash
Where a car would have been parked (not all our group)
Quite well constructed aqueduct
Aqueduct
Fountain at end of aqueduct
Butterfly enclosure
Butterfly encounter
Butterflies!
Chapel window
Original bell
And of course outside the chapel
Cemetery of the family plots

I now have many more items to research, after hearing from the guide about the Webb family who originally founded the property and the native Americans who lived there and built the fifteen foot tall wall out of oyster shells and trash. Walking into a part of that, which had been used as a garage was a smelly treat! I love caves but this was quite a different kind!

Of the trees, the ponytail or elephant palm was my favorite. The fountains and flowers were beautiful too, and definitely the one sponsored by the DAR ladies reminded me of my aunt Freda, and she’s the reason I am a DAR member.

It was a great outing on a day off work!

  1. Sheila-Thank you so much for posting these pictures in your blog. You did a beautiful job of documenting our visit. If you have no objections, I would like to save these pictures for myself as I did not take any. I, for one, would go back!
