Integrating the Spirals: Honor the soil and the farmer

I’d love to share the following message from Dr. Zach Bush to honor the soil and the farmer this Thanksgiving. This helps me honor my ancestors who all farmed in one way or another (some on only a few acres and my dad’s family who farmed 200 acres in the hills of West ‘By God’ Virginia)! If you feel inclined, please click the link at the end of the message to give to Farmer’s Footprint.

If we dare to listen, the soil whispers truths as old as time: that life is a cycle, that healing is possible, and that our future depends on the choices we
make today.

When I left the clinical world and stepped onto the farm, I began to see health in its truest form. It was not something confined to hospital walls or held in a prescription bottle. It was alive—in the soil, in the roots of plants, in the hands of farmers—and it was calling to be remembered.

What I discovered was both humbling and galvanizing: the health of our soil and the health of our bodies are one.

And yet, in the span of three generations, we’ve allowed this sacred relationship to erode. Industrial agriculture has depleted not only the nutrients in our soil but the vitality of entire communities. The result? Chronic disease is rising. Biodiversity is vanishing. Farmers—the stewards of our most vital resources—are struggling to survive.

But this is not where the story ends.

Nature is resilient. And so are we.

This Giving Tuesday, I invite you to join an act of remembering—of reconnecting to the soil, to the cycles of life, and to the shared stewardship that binds us to one another and the earth.

At Farmer’s Footprint, we are working to restore what has been lost: the connection between soil health, human health, and community resilience. We are witnessing extraordinary transformations:

  • Farmers rediscovering the abundance of regenerative  systems.
  •  Communities reconnecting through shared meals made from local, nutrient-rich food.
  •  Soil, once barren, now teeming with life and ready to nourish the  next generation.

This work is not easy. It requires vision, resources, and unwavering commitment. But the impact is profound.

This Giving Tuesday, I invite you to join an act of remembering—a reconnection to the soil, to the cycles of life, and to the shared stewardship that binds us. When you give to Farmer’s Footprint, you are joining a global community where regeneration is not just possible—it’s already happening, healing both the land and
the soul of humanity.

March 21st – Junkin’ it’s gone if it don’t last

It’s March 21st, 2024; Here’s an original blues song with catchy guitar riffs and a sizzling keyboard bridge. We love the fantastic vocals from Bubba Hudson on this tune. Plus, we greatly appreciate the extra attention to detail on the production mix by Steven Cooper, Nashville, TN.

Buy quality not junk

Here’s the eightieth new music post for 2024, as I consistently trek along on my journey to promote our original songs (and sell t-shirts, mugs, stickers, and more too). Yes, Richard did the lava surfin’ artwork on this music video and we have the matching designs you can buy on quality t-shirts, mugs, stickers, totes, phone covers, and more: https://www.teepublic.com/t-shirt/45250989-lava-surfer?store_id=2646769 and https://www.teepublic.com/t-shirt/45250529-lava-surfer?store_id=2646769 – they are all on sale too, right now!

My parents and grandparents taught me a valuable life lesson. Buy quality. Simply spending a few more dollars for things reduces how much ends up in the landfill. And we get to use our stuff for a lot longer–I still wear some of the clothing my mom bought. Plus, I have a coat from my grandmother! On a metaphysical level, I can feel the love through the clothes I inherited. I’ve handed several pieces of clothing down to my granddaughters as well!

Fun fact: When Richard had the stroke Oct. 2022, his rehab nurse loved this lava surfin’ t-shirt he was wearing so much, that Richard took it off and gave her the shirt off his back!

Reuse or recycle before throwing stuff out

I don’t have to tell you that landfills the world over are filled to the brim and overflowing. We’ve all seen pictures of the junk pile in the ocean too. So, please reuse and recycle before throwing junk out. You may have known a hoarder in your life (I have), or watched the TV show about hoarders–it’s not pretty. And hoarding is a mental illness.

Speaking of junk, please honor your body and eat real food not processed junk food.

Meme: “We’ve consumed meat, eggs & dairy for thousands of years. Processed foods have only been around for about 100 years. But for some reason animal foods get blamed for all our health woes, & processed junk food gets a pass. Weird. –Dr. James DiNicolantonio

This song may also apply to those of us who have been in unhealthy relationships. Sit with it for a while and consider this ‘going inward’ advice by Shirley MacLaine:

Improve the soil

I was so excited to see Dr. Zach Bush last night when his replay became available on Gaia! He did not disappoint. I felt his whole speech was genius! I probably held my breath through the first few minutes when he explained how a baby develops!

I sat mesmerized and will watch it again today and take notes. His profound way of holding my attention, even when presenting science-type information, is incredible. Not to mention Dr. Zach’s compassion, and immense love for humans–from babies to the dying. Ahh!
