February 25th – On our anniversary

It’s February 25th, 2024; We’ve got a country ballad for you in this original song. The touching and heartfelt lyrics in this song give the female space to tell her tale. It makes us glad our parents stayed with each other–through the ups and downs. Fun for us to sit and reminisce. Today’s our 19th wedding anniversary and both, Richard and I are simply happy to walk to breakfast and enjoy a light meal. No cards. No flowers. No gifts. We’ve peeled it all back to just enjoying our time together. Simple living. Of course, our breakfast out is a treat, so there’s that. Wink!

Wiping the sleep from her eyes

Here’s the fifty-sixth new music post for 2024, as I consistently share one of our original songs each day. This is an older Richard Murrey original song (written prior to me) that portrays a scene of a woman’s man leaving her with a little one, whether for the night or longer. He packed his guitar and toothbrush. The child asked, “Mama, is Daddy still your man?”

I love the different tones of the guitars in this song. For me, that’s the hook. And as I listen, memories flood in.

Gagged on her coffee

She spits out her Jimmy Dean (breakfast sausage). She never thought he’d leave. And now, she’s got a kid in tow. Thanks. Thanks a lot! Been there; lived that. And it’s not an easy life. Oh, the questions left for a child after a parent’s split. UGH

The bridge of this song always makes me smile. Something about those tones. And the space needed to process. By the end of the song, we hear that the guy has found some success. The reference to the truck driver brought a smile to my face.

Happy to have had the good times

My dad, grandfather, and uncle were truck drivers. So, I found this old picture of my daddy holding me up to a mirror. Here’s my ‘hats off’ to the dads that stay. Dad used to take some long truck runs but decided pretty early on to drive a city truck so he could be home more with us–though he was a ramblin’ man too.

Always loved this picture of my daddy holding me

May we all feel freer and soar in ’24! And here’s to keeping the beat in our lives by integrating processes that bring us more calm, ease, and JOY!

Yours in expanding, smiling, spiraling consciousness,

Sheila “Spiral Sister” Murrey

February 24th – One more second

It’s February 24th, 2024; We’ve got a fusion of country and rock music for you today in this original song. The smart lyrics in this song help the female empower herself as she moves on (from a relationship). It makes us think about Time and how we spend it.

Tick Tock

Here’s the fifty-fifth new music post for 2024, as I consistently provide you with a new original song each day. It’s an older Richard Murrey original song (written prior to me) that tells the love lost story from the female point of view. Julie Manners sings this from Steven Cooper’s music studio in Nashville, TN. I love the uptempo beat of this song!

Running through the memories of good times together, recalling sweet kisses, and times that will never happen again, are the main ideas in this upbeat song. I do find the balancing going on here, and call that good. It’s mature when we can look back and find the good, isn’t it? I’ll choose to focus on the empowerment in these words.

The beat goes on

So much of what goes on within a country rock song, besides the guitars, is the beat. I’ve heard so many people say they love (or only listen to) the beat of a song–often totally ignoring the lyrics! I know until I met Richard, I had no idea how songs were put together. And I had been a singer since childhood!

By the time I was a teenager and had learned how to write sheet music (from a great high school music teacher), I only wrote down what the time signature (such as 4/4 time) was for a song, but never played it, as I was much more concerned with establishing and writing down the melody. The time was important of course, to know how long to hold a quarter, half, or whole note while singing. I remember enjoying dreaming up melodies and writing them down, but only for my singing–I didn’t even play an instrument! I did visualize myself conducting an orchestra many times though.

While growing up, I listened to a lot of music–early on falling in love with classical music from having studied ballet. I also loved groups who incorporated vocal harmonies. And by the time I was a young teen, I’d found Queen and Styx and loved both bands! Of course, I grew up on The Beatles, and great groups like The Mamas & the Papas. But it was Mom who taught me how to harmonize when we sang together in church. Oh, and my maternal grandmother and mom’s sister, sang with us in church too!

I tried the guitar but never had the finger strength, reach, or dexterity to master it. Maybe I gave up too soon, But, even living with Richard for more than 20 years, I still am not interested in learning guitar. I sure have loved being around him while he played though, as I have always loved music. Come to think of it, my Mom and Dad loved music too! A stereo was their first major purchase when they got married! And like me, Mom was a singer, but never a musician–nor was Dad.

Speaking of parents, Richard’s Dad played the guitar a bit (but never sang) and his twin brothers both play guitar–though I’ve never heard them sing either. Richard’s sister sings though and has a good vocal tone as I recall. I guess Kentucky does produce a lot of artists! Nod to fellow blogger, Gray Summers, and our recent comment conversation regarding Johnny Depp and that Kentucky genetics must produce good artists.

Let me be brief

What did you think of Richard’s music ad in yesterday’s post? Let me leave it in today’s article as well (in case you missed it):

February 23rd – Having fun growing older

It’s February 23rd, 2024; Here’s an original song in the rock and blues music genre. The lyrics are tongue-in-cheek about aging. It talks about some of the ways in which we reach for items to help us feel better as we begin to feel the effects of aging. It’s a fun romp and hope you enjoy it.

The more fun we can have, the better!

Here’s the fifty-fourth new music post for 2024, as I consistently provide you with a new original song each day. This is one of my favorite Richard Murrey original songs because of the rock and blues influence, beat, and lyrics that help us think lighter and feel better about growing old. Maybe I enjoy this because I still feel relatively good at 62. Of course, I just did a blog post (and video on Facebook) about my stiff joints (fingers and knees) and how I resolved those issues. But nonetheless, compared to some other folks around my age, I feel I’m doing pretty good!

Guitar riffs

What do you think about the guitar riffs in this song? To your ear, is it more rock than blues? Music is subjective and we know each of you will enjoy this song (or not) for different reasons. But we’d love to hear what you think of it. Does it help you not feel so ‘over the hill’?

As well, we’d love to hear how you buy and consume music these days. We’ve been giving out some CDs and folks have told us they prefer plugging in a USB thumb drive (or flash drive) into their TV or computer to play music. So, Richard put together an ad for his songs. As a graphics artist, he designed this ad and all of the CD covers shown in it (and you also see these on the YouTube videos I’m sharing each day). But we don’t know if the ad lands well, as few have emailed Richard. Perhaps we need a ‘buy now’ button? What do you think?

Richard’s ad for our original music

February 22nd – Pain loves company

It’s February 22nd, 2024; Here’s an original song, yes, a ‘cry-in-your-beer’ song, written by my husband, Richard Murrey, and sung by a male professional singer in a Nashville, TN music production studio. This is a traditional country song with a steel guitar to boot!

Broken heart finds a honky tonk bar

Here’s the fifty-third new music post for 2024, as I consistently offer one of our original songs each day. This song asks if sitting at a honky tonk bar can help or hurt him–if he can find a new love or if a honky tonk angel will break his heart too (as apparently, the last love did). He asks why his broken heart always finds a honky tonk.

Steel guitar

Many years ago my Mom told me that her parents (my grandparents) used to play steel guitar. I remember that even as a child, I had wished they had recorded their songs. I would ponder how often they played steel guitar. Did they only play the steel guitars at church? Did they ever record any original songs? And I think because I always wondered about this (Mom said her Mom and Dad had quit playing steel guitars before they had children) and didn’t even speak of it often, that’s what has propelled me to write blog articles and books–and record original songs with Richard. Find the link in the About Us section near the end of this article if you want to see us performing a song.

To this day, I think steel guitar is one of the main reasons I can listen and enjoy Country Music! Though I love the spoons too, so there’s that.

Consider your options

This original country song might propel you to go to a bar and drink your sorrows away, though I don’t recommend it. Consider your options. There’s so much more to life than drinking alcohol.

February 21st – Renaissance man

It’s February 21st, 2024; Here’s an original song written by my husband, Richard Murrey, and sung by a male professional singer in a Nashville, TN music production studio. This is a pop song with flair. I could imagine it playing at a Renaissance fair.

Renaissance fair

Here’s the fifty-second new music post for 2024, as I consistently offer one of our original songs each day. Richard’s brothers are more into Renaissance festivals than he is, so we’ve never attended. But he wrote this song as a way of connecting to the Renaissance spirit. Then again, I’ve said that Richard is a Renaissance man (as he’s painted pictures with one hand and written song lyrics with the other), so there’s that.

Tom Hanks played a Renaissance Man

Several years ago, Richard and I watched the movie The Ladykillers, and it quickly became one of our favorites! It’s a great story plot (that hearkens back to one of my favorites, The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe). And the Coens always get their writing/directing right. Tom Hanks is always remarkable–the character he creates in The Ladykillers has to be one of his best. And Marlon Wayans is hysterical. Of course, the entire cast is incredible, and Irma P. Hall is stellar! Their sense of comic timing and top-rate performances are genius, and the choir singing is some of the best I’ve ever heard. It’s a movie that resonates with us on several levels. Check it out on DVD.

Think Ren-fest

This song is timely for me to share today as the Florida Renaissance Festival is going on right now and you can find out more about it on their site: https://www.ren-fest.com

Real Ren-Fest for us at Glastonbury Abbey, England (2019)

While I love festivals and ancient things, I didn’t know much about Glastonbury Abbey when we visited in 2019. After our visit there and having a couple of profound experiences, I will never forget it. I was so glad one of our friends from the Sacred Celtic Journey tour snapped this photo of Richard and me.

As well, we will always remember our real Renaissance festival-type experience when we took Eric’s Winterfell Game of Thrones Tour in 2019 and got to dress up in the appropriate apparel (from the show) at the last stop.

February 20th – On the lighter side

It’s February 20th, 2024; Here’s an original song written by my husband, Richard Murrey, and sung by a female professional singer in a Nashville, TN music production studio.

A bit lighter fare

Here’s the fifty-first new music post for 2024, as I consistently daily share one of our original songs. Richard created this video using a photo of his sister. The song bounces along with some light-hearted lyrics as our protagonist is happy on her own, living alone, and travelin’/ramblin’ around–town to town. I see her as a gypsy girl. A gal that loves ’em and then leaves ’em.

Fun lyrics

This song reminds me a bit of myself during my single years. Though Richard wrote this before meeting me, I can find parallels to pages within my own life, which always intrigues me. Richard tells me it’s because he’s a great observer of people. He has always enjoyed writing about the ‘human condition.’ And this is why I can relate to so many of his songs–even the ones he wrote years before he met me.

On the lighter side in Sedona, AZ (2016)

Not that this photo has much to do with this music post today, but I found it interesting that when I searched my hard drive for ‘lighter’ and for ‘light side’ it’s the photo I found (and I’ve already shared on an older post as well). It probably came up in my search because of the huge burst of sunlight in the image.

Yesterday, I wrote a bit about the yin-yang of things. In my next post, I’ll offer some insights from a yin-yang meditation that I do often.

February 19th – A mournful country tune – Remember

It’s February 19th, 2024; Here’s an original traditional country song that Richard Murrey wrote when he lived in Bishop, California. He was observing men who were in mourning over their significant others who had passed, and some who were simply lonely–and put pen to paper to craft this country tune.

Too sad?

Here’s the fiftieth new music post for 2024, as I practice consistency in the sharing of our original songs–one each day. Are the lyrics too sad? I would call it a ‘cry-in-your-beer’ song but I think it’s even too sad for that. It hearkens back to ‘He Stopped Loving Her Today’ except he didn’t die, only his other half crossed over (to the Grand Beyond).

I think I’ll let you listen and tell me how you take this. I’ve given you fair warning as to what it’s about:

Healing lyrics

This song gets me in my gut when I think of my Mom and Dad. I remember how Dad cared for Mom for the last several years of her life (Mom died of Alzheimer’s disease). Dad passed almost two years after Mom. Richard always says Dad died of a broken heart. All I know is Dad was sooo lonely. Intellectually, I know Dad missed his routine of caring for Mom and the yin-yang passion/arguments they’d shared for sixty years. But my heart aches that they didn’t have more good times. And as much as I attempted to help Dad, by suggesting he find a new purpose, socialize with his friends, or such, he would always tell me, “I miss her so” with his voice cracking. UGH

But I love to remember them like this, holding hands and smiling. This is a picture I took when I visited them and took my doggies–Mom loved Beau (and Lou-Lou)!

Mom, Beau on her lap, and Dad

I do attempt to keep my mind on the positive side of life, so I’d prefer to look at the photos I have during healthy times, like this one. And the times when we could all get together. Ah, this song is helping me heal–layer by layer on many levels.

I look forward to having more family time with my daughter and her family when we move up north this summer. It’s going to be a slow crawl for me, mentally, to let go of all Florida has meant to me though. But I believe I can do it. Music is healing! Songs like, Remember, help me heal from the past.

I know memories shift over the years, and I always find there’s a flip side (yin-yang) to Everything.

February 18th – Together. Too much?

It’s February 18th, 2024; Here’s an original song that Richard Murrey wrote after he’d retired and I was still going to an office for work each day. As I played this again today, I asked him, are we together too much? I began working from home in 2017 and he got called back to work for a couple of years (2018-2020). So, we had periods where he was home all day without me, and I was home all day without him.

Icky sweet?

Here’s the forty-ninth new music post for 2024, as I practice consistency in the sharing of our original songs–one each day. Is spending too much time together icky sweet?

We’ve agreed that we never get too much together time. And that’s sweet. The sweetest thing! We each work on our own stuff though, so it’s not like we’re holding hands all day. We do both complete each other’s sentences though. And when we’re watching The Why Files, Ancient Aliens, or America Unearthed (and the like), we often go, “Huh!” at the same time–which cracks us up. We often slightly elbow each other in those moments.

Pieces together

As you know though, I love putting pieces together and integrating stuff. For example, I am always taking parts and pieces of information I come across, or that come my way, and looking to see how I can integrate it into whatever I’m doing, or writing about. And sometimes I do have to work at it–other times it comes easy–the whole of it just falls into place. I love it when a plan comes together.

Words of completion (and healing?)

Speaking of pieces and phrases (as in the song when the singer sings, “You complete me.” I often glimpse the wholeness or completeness of a thing (such as a picture, journey, or life) when I read a poem (like the one I reblogged earlier today from Gray Summers). If I never get to Wales, it will be okay, because I now feel I know someone there. It’s almost as if Gray and his wife are living another version of our lives. And as fellow blogger, Debra, of Jaguar Spirit says at the end of her blog posts, “I am another you.” Oh! That’s why I love sitting with the Kaleidoscope. I feel the truth of my soul at these times.

What pieces have you put together? Did the images or words touch you deeply? Did you feel the completion was soul-deep?

I added a couple more favorite songs to my playlist today that I feel run soul-deep for me. Like, if I died today, my family could play all of the songs on my playlist and “get me.”

Oh, I don’t mean to be morbid (Richard tells me he thinks I ponder death too much), but I’ve never been one to fear death (while watching one of our favorite vloggers yesterday–Bald and Bankrupt: https://www.youtube.com/c/baldandbankrupt), the “everyone fears death” subject came up–thus, here I am sitting with that.

February 17th – Let it go and sleep better

It’s February 17th, 2024; Here’s an original pop-rock song for you! Richard wrote this before me, for someone he’d given this gift. When you listen, you’ll understand. As I’ve written in former posts, my husband can sure come up with some unique and quirky lyrics to spin a tale, and Steven Cooper ties it all together with Bubba Hudson doing the singing. Pro mix from Steven’s Nashville, TN music studio.

A pillow that’s ‘udderly’ fantastic

Here’s the forty-eighth new music post for 2024, as I consistently share an original song each day of the year. When you pay for something for a lover and then they leave, taking them with her. I say, “Let it go” often. I said it before the movie Frozen came out and I’ll continue saying it because the act of ‘letting go’ is so freeing! Let’s forgive (ourselves) and let go (of anyone who wants to leave). We’ll sleep better.

When you give a gift, it goes with them

When you give a gift, it goes with them if they leave. Don’t become too attached (to anyone or anything really). It’s only our attachment to anyone or anything that bothers us when it’s gone. Not to be too defeatist, but yeah, the Buddhists have it right about ‘Attachment.’

Remember, a pillow is a lot cheaper than silicone.

February 16th – Throwing it ALL into the wind

It’s February 16th, 2024; This original song is about throwing it ALL into the wind. It’s quite a different sound for us musically, too! If your better half is better off without you or if your passion for your beloved is gone. If your love for a friend is up in the air or you question the friendship. Maybe you feel alone, but wait! You can find your way back again.

Cool piano with a bit of funky wah pedal

Here’s the forty-seventh new music post for 2024, as I consistently share an original song each day of the year. When your lover’s embrace hides a cold steel heart or when you doubt their words, like broken promises–you’ve thrown it all in the wind.

If you don’t think you’ve got a friend

Doubt can kill, or if not kill, can put a stranglehold on any friendship or relationship. Doubt always seems to grow too! If you don’t think you’ve got a friend, you’re probably right. Well, at least it’s a fifty-fifty shot that you’re right.

Sometimes it’s better to just walk away, throw it all in the wind, and be done. But wait! Why not give yourself a chance to approach the situation logically first? Understand that while you’re in ‘fight or flight’ mode, the amygdala in your brain will keep you from thinking rationally.

Try this little process:

  • Give yourself some time to cool down
  • Allow your emotions to calm down (do some EFT / Tapping or other energy psychology if needed–I used to teach EFT and linked to my previous article on it)
  • Make a list (mental or on paper) pros and cons of the friendship (be rational)
  • Check-in with your heart

What does your heart feel about this person? Perhaps giving them another chance is appropriate. But if you’ve already given the person several (or many) opportunities to prove themselves (and the worth of the relationship to you), okay. You have probably reached the end. And often it is better to part as friends, with at least some good feelings, than to wait until the situation becomes unbearable.

February 15th – A song about me!

It’s February 15th, 2024; This original is a song all about me! Haha! Blushing here. Oh, my goodness! Yes, this is one of several songs my husband wrote for me, and strongly hints at my name in the title and chorus. What a follow-up to Valentine’s Day, eh? There’s the expert saxophone of John Heinrich, vocals by our wonderful Bubba Hudson, and a vibrant production mix by Steven Cooper, Nashville, TN.

A snappy jazzy song

Here’s the forty-sixth new music post for 2024, as we carry on consistently with our one-a-day song share for the year. Let us know what you think about this snappy tune! It’s got a powerful sax riff in the bridge and an uptempo beat for dancing–one of my favorite things to do!

Ooh-la-la, yes!

What is ooh-la-la anyway? Haha! I think it’s nearly inexplicable. Much like how Richard and I met after both of us had nearly given up on love.

Cupid worked up a great romance of nearly twenty years for us though! Yes, this is a love song for sure. Am I lucky or what?

Whether you’re single or in a relationship, we hope you had a lovely Valentine’s Day everyone!

As for our Valentine’s Day, I bought my own chocolates (some small batch chocolates with caramel and sea salt that was at the cashier stand at Publix–which I almost never impulse buy at the checkout) and I had previously ordered but hadn’t eaten yet, freeze-dried strawberries dipped in chocolate from Kroger. For dinner, I fried up some fresh catfish for Richard. I had a few bites to taste it and make sure it was done though. The fish was good, but I’m not a catfish fan. I made a little Indian meal of lamb saag for myself with some naan bread. (We have both really been into the naan bread recently.) So, we had a simple, but lovely day as we both allowed our bodies to heal from the crud that’s been going around. Cough-cough! UGH

Speaking of strawberries, this was us back in 2017 at the big Strawberry Festival in Plant City, Florida. We’d gotten into the concert area early so I got a selfie pic of us with no one behind us. I think this was the last big concert we attended. I wrote yesterday of the Live performances we saw in 2019 when we went to Ireland, England, and Scotland on our Sacred Celtic Journey, but failed to mention that on our last day in Edinburgh, a jazz festival was going on (at the Grass Market where we’d stayed). We thoroughly enjoyed that as well. I must find some of those pictures to share!

February 14th – Happy Valentine’s Day!

It’s February 14th, 2024; This original rock song is perfect for Valentine’s Day! It says, “Since we met there’s been electricity. Since we met there’s been chemistry. I can’t stop thinking about you.” The lovers in this song are in synchronistic harmony!

A rock song for lovers

Here’s the forty-fifth new music post for 2024, as we entertain you this Valentine’s Day with an original rock song. This song for lovers is an especially happy tune and aims to get your feet moving! Dance along to the rhythm of it!

Can’t stop thinking about you

If you’ll be my Valentine, I’ll tell the world you are mine.

Oh, the ripple effect of love is strong! Just what we need today too, since I wrote about the negatives of my parent’s dysfunctional relationship yesterday. To be sure, that was just the flip side of all the passion they felt. I often think of their romance in a yin-yang way, because I know they loved each other deeply. Mom would often tell me she “couldn’t live without” my Dad. So, whether it was a co-dependent relationship or not (and in my view it was), I know they experienced deep love. There was just a lot of ‘control’ within it too because they were so magnetically attracted to each other.

Joy is a positive indicator of love

Where manipulation and control are negative indicators of love (or lust), the flip side of that is Joy. I feel joy is a positive expression of love. And the more we can be IN the Joy resonance of life, the better everything gets!

Richard and I at Glendalough, Ireland (July 2019)

When two people deeply love each other there is no need to control. One supports the other in their work and hobbies. They spend time together. They share their hopes and dreams. They comfort and care for each other through thick and thin. They give each other space. They support each other’s soul growth. They even stretch out of their personal comfort zone to go somewhere their love wants to go! Case in point, Richard had not flown in over 20 years (due to a harrowing experience he’d had) and somehow managed his Energy to go with me on a Sacred Celtic Journey in 2019. We went to Ireland, England, and Scotland. And we had the best time! We did some specific things Richard wanted to do too, like the Game of Thrones tour and meeting one of his singers at a pub in Scotland–and I got to dance with a band that played! We also walked one night to another pub to see a Live band perform (even navigating that night through a bit of a scary underground passageway in Edinburgh).

I’m revisiting these posts today and looking back on our photos from that journey to celebrate our Valentine’s Day. Along with listening to our original love songs, of which, Valentine is only one (Richard has written many love songs for me).

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone!

Richard and Sheila in Edinburgh, Scotland (July 2019)
