“The Masters and the Path”by C. W. Leadbeater
Among the early major figures authoring Theosophical Teachings was Mr. Leadbeater (1847-1934) was an eminent seer and occultist, who wrote of the Masters, Mahatmas, Adepts and Arhats in this book. Their “existence is one of the most important of the many facts which Theosophy puts before us.”
Drawing on his personal experiences, the experiences of others, and the teachings of the religions, the mystics and the saints, he writes about the personalities of the Masters, Their homes, Their work, Their nature and Their powers. He also describes the various stages of the Path the aspirant must tread to reach Them, from probation to acceptance as Their disciple, and beyond, to Arhat levels. In the book, the author also deals with the topics of Initiations and The Seven Rays.
Charles Leadbeater worked with Helena Blavatsky and Henry Olcott, both founders of The Theosophical Society in 1875. He also co-authored Theosophical books with Annie Besant, then the future president of the Society.
The Masters, who guided the founding of the Theosophical Society were Master Morya, Master Koot Hoomi, and Master Djwal Khul. They are known as the Trans-Himalayan Masters. Please note that The Master Djwal Khul also wrote the Alice Bailey books. We should not confuse these Masters with those called the Ascended Masters acclaimed by Guy Ballard of the I Am movement and taken up later by Mark and Elizabeth Prophet.
Just for clarity, after reaching enlightenment or Nirvana, Masters have earned the right to merge with the All which is called ascension. This would prevent Them from being in touch with humanity since They would be abandoning Their lower physical vehicles of consciousness. Out of compassion and to help us in our struggle to realize Truth They may choose not to ascend but instead keep Their physical bodies. This was the chosen path of the Theosophical Masters whom C.W. Leadbeater met.
