When I sit down with a blank piece of paper, or my iPhone notepad, or WordPress blank page to write a blog article, the following are various sources I use in my topic research. If you would rather listen instead of read, play the audio (and there’s a few minutes of BONUS info on the audio this time too!):

Websites

Generally, I use free websites (go to the source as I often say) that are known to be reputable. I add to this list and remove as necessary when enough information proves their bias (like Snopes, which I haven’t used in years).

Ecosia, the search engine that plants trees: https://www.ecosia.org

EDGAR for financial matters or deep dives on publicly traded companies: https://www.sec.gov/edgar/search-and-access

ETF for stock research: https://www.etfrc.com

DuckDuckGo, for deep dive internet searching (better than Google IMHO): https://duckduckgo.com

FTC, yes, sometimes it’s necessary to go to Government sources: https://www.ftc.gov

IPEDS search, if you’re interested in who is funding the college or university you’re thinking of attending or putting in your will (to be a benefactor): https://nces.ed.gov/ipeds/

Always follow the money

Since making a conscious choice to “vote with our dollars” in 2008, I began searching how best to determine where the money comes from that funds companies, organizations, schools, and more. I nearly became as obsessed with this as I did with the ingredients in our food.

Thus, I went back to some old notes I had from my college days, no, not just when I attended college for a degree, but when I worked for a university. And yes, I have kept a LOT of my notes, and it’s something I want to go through again after I retire. I’ve felt for decades that people will often slant their opinions based upon who is paying them. Thus, when I begin to research a company I want to order products from or write a blog article in support of, I will go to the search engines listed previously and enter the company’s name in place of the XYZ here, and press Enter. “XYZ portfolio funds” or “XYZ private equity” and see if I can ascertain who funds their enterprise. I have also found that when companies and organizations are proud of who funds them, they’ll offer that information up directly on their own website, but I’ve learned not to count on that. And often, companies are rather vague about who their benefactors are especially if those benefactors are not politically correct at the moment. Though I must say, it’s getting easier to spot who is and is not supportive of your particular ideology.
