My friend and WildFit coach, asked me to give a rundown on all the many names for Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) some time back and I promised it would be the next blog article. Then I buried the request in my TO DO blog folder and completely forgot about it. But I opened that folder this weekend and decided, girl, I had better get on THIS! Ha!
If this is a controversial subject for you, I offer my humble apologies in advance. I had NO IDEA the topic of MSG was considered racist at all! So, I am not offering this information to be racist and please don’t take it that way. Of course, I cannot control how you will read (or listen) to this article, as we each see life through a unique lens and can choose which Science to follow–yes, there’s more than one school of thought and dogma in Science.
If you would rather listen instead of read, play the audio (and there’s a couple BONUS comments on the audio):
My (FDA) Analysis
Turns out as I began reading the first article to dig into the research, I knew what I was reading looked familiar. So, I jumped over to my other blog and sure enough, TA DA! I’d already written a blog article on this a few months ago! https://beingwhollyvibrant.wordpress.com/2023/07/21/all-you-need-to-know-about-msg/
I love it when a plan comes together. This is why I blog too, so if/when I forget, I can simply do a word search on my blog to find out if I’ve previously researched something. And in this case, go figure, I had! So, let me take the opportunity to tell you what foods we no longer consume anymore because they raised my hubby’s blood pressure too much.
High sodium foods (or ones that contain too much MSG) we no longer eat
Veggie fried rice from a restaurant – Lesson learned awhile back. We thought limiting Richard’s portion of this would allow him to be able to eat it without an issue. But after he ate 1/2 serving on one day and the other 1/2 the next day, we had to take a trip to the Emergency Room. I’m not sure exactly what was in the vegetable fried rice, but we decided not to chance it anymore. It’s not something I usually eat either, so this really only means he can’t order it anymore. I do make plain rice at home and I use coconut aminos so he can have a bit of that umami flavor. And I can stir fry some vegetables too.
Canned soup – The sodium of canned soup is simply ridiculous. I do NOT understand why it has to have so much salt in it, but it was one of the first foods we stopped buying after hubby had a stroke.
Condiments – We stopped buying regular soy sauce, barbecue sauce, ketchup, and mayonnaise some time ago, mostly due to the sugar content, but we even stopped by low-sodium soy sauce due to the sodium and MSG in it. Plus, soy in general has been so bastardized (affects hormones) that we quit buying it YEARS ago. I do buy Primal Kitchen sauces but not regularly due to the cost and that we can live without these, so they are a treat when I do buy them.
Frozen meals – This had been something else we had went a bit overboard on after we moved from the Off Grid property and had an oven and microwave again. I will always feel these contributed to Richard’s stroke, even in some small way.
Packaged noodles – Richard loved Udon noodles and I used to buy them once or twice a month for him. Not anymore! Again, most of the salt comes from the seasoning packet, so if you buy these, just throw the seasoning away.
Seasonings – We switched to Mrs. Dash and a few other smaller companies that make and sell no salt herb seasonings in a jar. I sprinkle it on foods while I cook and use these sparingly. Everything else we used to use, like Cajun Creole seasoning mixes, we quit buying.
Dining out – Yes, we also limit which restaurants we go to as well. We learned that our nearby diner has a brown gravy that is loaded with sodium, so we never order it. We don’t order any casseroles either. We stick to foods we can identify and ask for the low-sodium option like, marinara sauce. We limit our cheeses, and say no to parmesan, but we know eating at restaurants can be dicey.
We simply limit how often we go out. And of course, now, we walk everywhere so that helps a lot!
I follow the Is-ness or ‘Snails Path’
Energy is the power behind ALL. Source creates. ALL rises, falls, undulates, pulsates, spins, whirls, collapses, expands, shrinks. The Dao (Daoism) emanates from the dot. Holism envelopes. ALL simply IS. Omniscience (Omnism) governs ALL.
