First things first

  • Honestly assess your skill level of the software available to you
  • Obtain and learn (or gain further knowledge) of the software available for your use
  • Make a list of key resources (to help you on the software, processes, and business sense needed for you to achieve success)
  • Know who to call/chat with/interview internal and external to the company
  • Consider experts known on LinkedIn and other social media
  • Keep a journal of everyone within your company (or your client’s company) and their top specialties/knowledge
  • Setup calendar reminders of “not to be missed” calls and meetings, even “Update timesheet”
  • Create a personal cheat sheet to remember “go to” people, places, or things needed to accomplish your tasks

Proactive

  • Create a “READ FIRST” motivational document and keep it on your desktop
  • Source and attend industry conferences
  • Create a living document of Internet search Favorites/Bookmarks
  • Update your ‘Daily Search Cheat Sheet’ periodically
  • File daily/weekly TO DO directional notes within topic folders (name them 1 – [Title], 2 – [Title] etc. in order of importance to easily find them)
  • Attend industry specific webinars monthly to sharpen your skills or build initial familiarity (such as ‘Jennifer Schaus Fed Con Gov’ in the Federal Contracting space)
  • Consider strategic advertising with those who produce the most helpful webinars in your space; ask/determine their conversion rate too
  • Download free checklists (be aware that puts you on their email list)
  • Create reusable templates
  • Use Dropbox per opportunity
  • Streamline Sharepoint
  • Streamline Salesforce
  • Setup shared Wiki
  • Keep your company website current
  • Build a book of past performance, portfolio, or writing samples
  • Build a book of design elements
  • Build an ‘Allocation Schedule’ (if you have a team) to plan and watch resource bandwidth

Reactive

  • Industry type procurement watch lists
  • Reply and submit to offers
  • Watch and comment on YouTube, Vimeo, Vidsee, or other videos to get your name out and build reach
  • Vet by credentials and breadth/depth of knowledge
  • Search per type of business such as: SDVOSB and VOSB
